Generator Enclosure A Guarantee For Safety And Durability

If a generator is essential to tide over power outages, so is an enclosure indispensable for it to guard against weather and theft. A generator enclosure comes in various sizes to protect generators of different capacities.

Made of aluminium sheets this generator enclosure is non-inflammable and anti-corrosive, not forming any rust. Typically it is most suitable for housing portable generators of capacities upto 18KW.

Types:

Types come based on capacities of portable generators of 7.0KW and below, 8-12 KW, and  10.0 -18.0KW. Space and design features also vary as the sizes vary.

Upto 7.0KW:

Being small, these types have even home-made, improvised generator sheds (or enclosures) made using suncast sheets. However, there are standard scientific design features for enclosures which are to be complied with for overall safety.

This comes handy as an enclosure particularly for portable generators of 8-12 KW Capacities owing to the metal sheds being generally, sufficiently big in a backyard. They are converted into sheds by suitable additions and modifications.

Extra features:

They include digital carbon monoxide detector and alarm to warn ventilation failures. Judicious fixing of locations for generator, vent locations and exhaust fans in the old shed would make an ideal enclosure, in spite of its oldness. Power cables should be properly negotiated to avoid any hazards.

Enlarged version:

There is an enlarged version with additional features for protecting portable generators of higher capacities 10-18KW with more cooling capability. Dimensions are 112”L  X33” D  X 34  H for this range with sufficient space.

Special additions:

Extra high capacity dual cooling fans positioned on intake and outlets provide the enhanced cooling and circulation. And the hoods with higher air velocity are fitted to reduce rain ingress into the generator compartment.

Electrical fittings:

Transfer switch, panels and sockets for engine plugs and wirings should be placed in a dry, weather –protected place to avoid shocks. High temperature cut -outs for auto stopping should be installed to save generators from excess heat.

Suitability and readiness for use:

This arrangement is suitable for air-cooled, gasoline, diesel, natural gas, or propane fuelled gensets. For liquid-cooled generators, separate arrangements are to be added.

During power outages, it is ready for starting without any dragging or manoeuvring.

General:

Generator Enclosure as a general rule, is not to be installed in residential annexes. Still higher capacity Generators are to be housed in concrete structures with more stringent specifications. The enclosure comes with detailed assembly and installation instructions, which serve as good guidance for standard installation and long life.
