Generator Enclosure

As we all know that the whole world has become very conscious about pollutions and every individual being a part of the world has many responsibilities towards protection of the environment. Sound pollution is one of the reasons behind environmental hazards. So all of us must pay some attention towards such issues and should adopt environmental protection measures in our day to day life.

One of the measures that can be very easily implemented in our regular life towards controlling noise pollution is by setting up a soundproof enclosure for our generators. We often use generators in our home and offices for electricity support whether it is for production purpose, for running machines in offices or for starting up of a microwave oven for cooking purposes. These generators create too much noise when started and spreads noise pollution in the environment. So it is well understood that how much a soundproof Generator Enclosure contributes towards controlling noise pollution.

Materials required for constructing such boxes are easily available in the stores. Following are the steps that are required to be followed to make a soundproof cover for generators.

Measurement- Firstly it is essential to know the correct size of the generator which depends upon the size of the generator.

a) Take accurate measure of the thickness of the insulation

b) Take accurate measure of the ventilation provisions to be made in the Generator Enclosure.

Cutting of the box- cutting of the box should be made according to the measurement taken. In case of non availability of MDF or soundboard, it is advisable to use general plywood.

a) Total sides of the box will be 5 including 4 walls and 1 for the top surface.

Arrangement of holes for ventilation- unless proper holes are made for ventilation there will be excessive storage of gases which may affect the generator.

a) Make holes in the body of the box for ventilation

b) One hole is required to be made on the top of the box and the other one on the opposite side end for exhaust of air.

Proper insulation- body of the box should be insulated properly for making it soundproof.

a) Allow layers of free space for allowing the sound to disperse

b) For additional effect those materials can be used that minimizes sound and should be layered upon the box

c) The first layer should be made up of vinyl MLV which supports mass loading

d) Then it should be properly glued to the sound box.

Caulking of the first layer- caulking of the edges of the box is very essential to make it concrete.

a) Caulking of the edges of vinyl box can be done by use of special acoustical caulking mix

b) Regular caulk may also be used but such caulks are not very effective to absorb the sound generated from the generator.

Foam matting for building layer 2- foam matting is made up of cell vinyl nitrile which is required to be glued over the layer 1 and then caulk the edges for complete insulation. Such material is easily available in any stores.

Installation of venting ducts- passage of air is very essential to keep the machine in good condition

a) Proper vending ducts can be made by making lots of bending in them as sound wave travels in linear path hence curves will avoid spreading of sound from the box

Arranging the parts together- finally all the layers and parts are required to be arranged properly by use of screws, nails and glue. However, arranging of the parts can be done before or after insulation also.

Apart from the above one can also use some specialized soundproof materials like rock wool, plaster boards etc but such materials are very costly in comparison to the above mentioned items. Another option is to build two insulated boxes with few inches of space in between. So take a step towards reducing noise pollution by making a soundproof enclosure for your generator.
